As an entrepreneur, there will come a time when for one reason or another, whether it's a meeting with a bank manager or venture capitalist, you will have to make an impact. Impressions (rightly or wrongly) are made within the first few seconds of an encounter, so you need to ensure you make the right one.
Creating an impact is about knowing your environment and knowing yourself. What you wear, what you say, how you stand will all assist in the type of impact you have on others. Natural-confidence is about being at ease with yourself and who you are. Make sure you’re comfortable in your clothes; if you have bought a new suit, try and wear it before the meeting so you don’t feel uncomfortable when wearing it. Take this approach with shoes as well! Remember that what you wear also creates an impression. Don’t wear clothing that is too tight, too bright, or too scruffy. Smart dress is always preferably (although a more relaxed environment may allow for a more smart-casual approach), as well as good grooming and cleanliness. Always wear clean clothes and ensure you remember to use deodorant. These may seem obvious, but if you let any area lapse, it won’t be forgotten by those you interact with. Always allow plenty of time before any meeting and make a trial-run before the day of the meeting, so you are clear on the route. You should arrive 15 minutes before any meeting, don’t arrive too early or too late. If you do find yourself running late, do not panic, simply call and let the necessary people know.
