You’ve heard of the American dream, Tycoon is the British dream. Could you be the next Tycoon?

If you live in the UK there is a new series airing this Tuesday on ITV1 called Tycoon in which Peter Jones (Dragons Den) has given £10,000  of his own money to  six people (actually seven, including two job sharers) to create a business with a healthy profit in just 10 weeks – based at “Tycoon Towers” in London.

Peter, who owns 49% of each business, will ensure that any profits generated from any business over the 10 week period are transferred to the winning Tycoon who'll be able to take their fast-growing successful business to the next level, and beyond

Peter, who owns 49% of each business, will ensure that any profits generated from any business over the 10 week period are transferred to the winning Tycoon who'll be able to take their fast-growing successful business to the next level, and beyond.
If at any time, Peter starts to loose faith in any entrepreneur, he can liquidate their company –meaning the pressure is always on for the contestants
As a successful businessman, Peter Jones seems an obvious choice to be the face and mentor on this show. His appearance on Dragon’s Den on the BBC, along with other successful entrepreneurs such as Duncan Bannatyne helped raise his profile across the nation.
As a child Peter used to day dream in his father’s office of running a multi-million pound company and believes this is key to the success of an entrepreneur:
“Make time to daydream and ignore anyone who mocks you. The mocking will stop when you're able to make your dreams a wonderful reality - and they're not.”
He went on to make that dream a reality, building a £200 million business empire by the age of 35.

Peter hasn’t always had the life of luxury and believes that his experience of a failed business venture – which left him penniless - highlighted a key trait that all entrepreneurs should be aware of ; getting carried away with the success rather than keeping a close eye on the business.
It was this experience that led to his personal mantra “there’s no such thing as failure, just feedback.” He picked himself up and went on to the success he is today.  He is owner, chairman and chief executive officer of various businesses ranging from telecoms and leisure to publishing, media and recruitment.

Tycoon is his first series for ITV1 and is being made by his production company, Peter Jones TV. For him, there is a clear ethos behind series.
He says: “We're a nation of wasted ideas and talent. I want to inspire people to take a risk and become entrepreneurs. I've handpicked a diverse group of people, not the normal suited and booted types you see in business, to show that if you've got a good idea mixed with passion anyone can do it. I also want to take the mystery out of making money.”

He offers the following tips for budding entrepreneurs:

  1. Vision – When you dream it you can do it. Reaching one horizon leads to another. Realise your big dream.
  2. Influence – You will always need others. Using others provides a win win situation
  3. Confidence – Have the inner-self belief in what you can do and achieve. Be careful not to confuse this with arrogance
  4. Commitment - Once you have made your decision take action – get things done.
  5. Results orientated – Energy and focus in ideas brings clarity to goals
  6. Timing – Good health and supportive partners are important to your success.
  7. Perseverance – determination & persistence.
  8. Caring – Take the time to understand the needs and wants of the key people within your business
  9. Action – make things happen.
  10. Intuition – Use your inbuilt radar system.

If this show’s anything like Dragons Den or The Apprentice, we’re in for some interesting TV over the next few weeks. And, as most of you have probably already guessed, we will have the final decision on who is the winner in the final.

choice was right

I saw this the other night and think Peter made the right decision in letting the guy with the school newspaper go. He really didn't seem to know what he was doing (dispite being the young entrepreneur of the year). Next will be the guy with the bag for holding shopping bags.
give it a chance

I do agree, it wasn't as punchy as expected, but I think - first show, give it a chance. Peter Jones knows what he's doing and I'm sure we've got some good stuff to see. He's not going to risk his own money on a no hoper - I think you can already see the competitiveness is there amongst the guys and he's bound to play on that
next tycoon?

I saw this - a bit disappointing really. I can't believe thousands of poeple applied and those shown last night were the best! Didn't seem to be many that really wanted to go for it. The two women were probably the best - definately seemed the most dedicated. The woman doing the drink "Fruka" didn't seem to be on the ball at all!
