Dot Com, or Not Dot ComPosted by Jay in website, targeted marketing |
It is widely accepted that having a .com top level domain name is critical to success. However, increasingly I am finding advertisers will pay more for sites that are more 'targeted'. So, a .co.uk domain for example being obviously aimed at UK users only can command more money than a more general 'International' .com domain.
In fact .com now seems to be becoming synonymouswith sites that target the US only.
As a result of this I have decided to produce two versions of my forthcoming site - a .com and a .co.uk version (the .com version being aimed at US users only). Doing this should make it possible to gain far better demographic information for the purposes of marketing and attracting advertising.
This of course will increase the maintenance work required. However, I am working on an architecture that should allow for administration from one point for both sites.
