Creating Your Own FaviconPosted by Jay in website icon, favicon |
I managed to get a large amount of work done on the new site over the weekend and one of the tasks I completed was creating a favicon for the site.
For those who aren't familiar with this term, a favicon is the small icon that you see at the left of the location bar of your browser when you visit certain sites. Prior to version 7 of Internet Explorer these used to only appear if a userbookmarked a website page. However, now they appear automatically in the new version (Firefox has always displayed these).
If you are interested in creating one for your own website then all you need is the image you want to see in 100 x 100 pixel format. Then upload this into one of the many free generators available on the web (http://www.favicon.co.uk/ ) is one. This will generate the .ico file that you need.
Next place this in the root directory of your website and make sure you name it favicon.ico. Newer browsers will automatically pick it up when a user navigates to your site but for users with older browsers add the following line between the and tags of all your pages:
That's it, hope it helps;-)
