Do Google have too much power? 2007/08/22 04:18 Karma: 1
Following on from Jay's blog, it concerns me how much power Google now have over the web. If everything is going to be based on budget, does this mean that the "powers that be" can now completely control what information we are given?

Has anyone used "Live" as a search engine yet? Microsoft's search engine?

This is actually the basis of Ask's current advertising campaign - 'Should all of the world's information be controlled by one company?'.

Anyone familiar with Google's background will know that the inventors presented a 'better' more sophisticated way of generating search results when they were working on their PageRank algorithm. This subsequently was developed into a working system by Teoma (a small 10 person company) who were then recently bought by Ask.

So, if you want to see what Google's founders thought was a better engine why not try out the new Ask.com search.

Cheers Jay. I read The Google Story (put a blog on here about it actually) and it does give the impression the guys were anti-corporate, but hey. I've checked out Ask's engine - looks great, a lot better than it used to. I'll look at using them as well (I haven't really bothered before). The "power" of one search engine dominating the web does concern me - it wouldn't be allowed in any other arena....

I do think they have done and still do a good job though. I know what you mean about the "power" thing. I haven't looked at the live one you mentioned so will check out now
