Yeah, I have been told that turning on and off appliances uses up more electricity than if an appliance was left on stand by. Is that right? ...

No - I keep buying the re-useable ones and then forgetting them! So still use loads of carrier bags - sorry

I'm sure you. If they're plastic, put them in the plastic recyling bins???

I think so. I also think that some of the larger FMCGs could make a difference by cutting back on the amount of packaging they produce for products, most of which simply gets binned. Toiletries seem to be the worst....
